Lakota Woman Artist
Keli Shangreaux, daughter of Marcella Cash, was born on the Rosebud Reservation and has lived in places like Texas Co. and North Dakota, but she has found home to be the rolling hills of South Dakota. Keli is a Lakota Artist. Her dream began the first time she picked up a crayon. She knew then that she wanted to create and share the beauty she sees. She is a White River High School Graduate, class of 1989. This fall she will graduate from Sinte Gleska University with a bachelor's degree in art with an emphasis in painting. In 1997 she won third place in the Black Hill's Pow Wow Art Show. She currently has work that is being shown at the Washington Center for Performing Arts in Washington State. And now, her water colors have been selected by Hidden Mountain Productions to become signed prints, to be sold in various stores and establishments. Keli has come a long way to see her dreams come true. Keli is a single mom, with three wonderful children,Justice, 5, Greydon, 3, and Nora, 1, that serve as inspiration in much of her work. "Being a woman artist is harder" Keli stated as she signed her name across one of her prints, "and being a mother, you have responsibilities that come first, before your artwork...after the kids are taken care of, then you have some time for yourself." It also proves harder to enter art shows, many requiring entry fees. And of course there is always the little ones that want to "help". There have been a few paintings that have been finished by a crayon stick figure added in by an aspiring artists in diapers. When asked where her inspiration comes from Keli's eyes sparkle in reply, "from being a mother, and my family." Keli feels her work was always missing something, never quite complete, until she became a mother. Now her creativity flourishes. The ideas come to her from many sources, from a baby's smile to a mother's embrace. Her life is being "mom" to her little ones, and being a painter, Keli has found her strength. When asked what she plans to do now her reply is simple, "create for as long as I can". Keli works in all mediums, and plans to work in oils and sculptures but that has to wait until the kids are older. She also does poetry and beadwork, and always has a project or two underway. She plans on returning to school and getting her masters. But Keli also has a dream, one she plans on seeing brought to reality. Keli plans on building a youth camp / artist retreat. "The Black Hills IS for artists" Keli refers to the inspiration and energy of the hills. She loves the area and wants to stay in South Dakota. She envisions a youth camp for kids during the summer, and in the off season, a place for artists to come and find solace and inspiration. Her advice, when asked, was direct. Go to School. Especially if you want to be an artist, take your raw talent and study the arts, the fine arts, learn the rules and the history and refine your talents. And for everyone's dreams, she added, everyone who has a dream should go for it. "There are people who are nice and will do everything they can to help you." Keli adds as a sleepy eyed little one emerges from a hallway and curls into mom's lap. "If you have the dream it is possible to achieve it." |
