Horses Helping Horses This foal may look like just any horse but he's not just any horse...he's a mustang foal born into our wild herd here on the santuary. To survive in the wild herd until weaning, this baby has to learn many things that domestic horses never need to learn. First our open prairie and forest lands are vast, rugged, steep, and rocky in many places so he must be careful about every step he takes to prevent a nasty fall where fatal injuries could occur. He must also look out for rattlesnakes, sharp edged yucca plants, big cats, coyotes, and prairie dog holes as his life is in peril if he is careless. The mustang genes he was born with have naturally selected for strong bone, superior feet, endurance and much more native intelligence than generations of domesticated horse now generally have. His life in the herd is one of constant movement to feeding grounds and water, sometimes many miles a day, so he's thrifty and fit. And mustangs, when gentled, have an extraordinary capacity to be loyal and trusting if they respect you, probably because of the social skills they must learn in large herds to have a peaceful life. While experience handling horses born in the wild is generally a plus, you can expect that, by taking your time and by learning about how to work with wild horses, this foal and a small number of others that we now have for sale through our Horses Helping Horses program, will make EXCEPTIONAL trail riding, pleasure, and ranch horses for the reasons that are listed above. If you are looking for an extraordinary experience with a horse, purchase a Black Hills Wild Horse Sancturary foal from the mustang herd TODAY. We will do everything we can to assist you in the process of taking home your foal(s). –Mary Williams Hyde, owner of the best horse I have ever ridden– Rio, son of Prairie Lark and half-brother of Prairie Lonesome.
Horses Helping Horses is one of the most important programs at the Sanctuary. It enables us to use our best resources –our horses- to support the wild mustangs. Proceeds from foals sales go directly to providing everything from salt licks to winter hay. Through Horses Helping Horses, you have the opportunity to buy superb horses while helping America’s wild mustangs. Contact Susan Watt, 1 605-745-7494 or email iram@gwtc.net for more information.
