American Profile

Wild Mustangs of the Badlands feature story!

by Karen Karvonen

It’s rugged country fit more for beast than man. In the remote South Dakota badlands, once sacred to American Indians who stalked buffalo on its plains, coyote howls echo off the walls of deep canyons—and 500 wild mustangs run free, thanks to former bronc rider, bullfighter, cattle rancher and rodeo photographer Dayton O. Hyde........

More than 26,000 years ago, large Columbian and woolly mammoths were trapped and died in a spring-fed pond near what is now the southwest edge of Hot Springs, South Dakota. Wind Cave: http://www.nps.gov/wica/

Wind Cave: One of the world's longest and most complex caves and 28,295 acres of mixed-grass prairie, ponderosa pine forest, and associated wildlife are the main features of the park.

The cave is well known for its outstanding display of boxwork, an unusual cave formation composed of thin calcite fins resembling honeycombs.

The park's mixed-grass prairie is one of the few remaining and is home to native wildlife such as bison, elk, pronghorn, mule deer, coyotes, and prairie dogs.

Cave tours are offered daily throughout the year. For tour schedule information go to www.nps.gov/wica/Schedule.htm.
