Rural America is a great place to locate a business. Modern transportation and communication technology
allows businesses to serve customers through out the globe. And to sweeten the deal, rural America has
low taxes, a low cost of living, and most importantly a strong work ethic. Creating a favorable climate for
business is one of our highest priorities here on the Rosebud Indian Reservation. We invite you to call or
visit the Rosebud Sioux Tribe, please, contact the RST Resource Development Office to schedule an appointment.

Chief Spotted Tail (Sinte Gleska) Brule/Sicangu Sioux was born in 1823 or 1824 in present day lands that cover
the Rosebud Sioux Sicangu Nation near the northern edges of the White River. Chief Spotted Tail was one of the
signers of the Fort Laramie Treaty of 1868.
Upon signing the treaty his tribe was moved to an area close to the Missouri River in present day south central
South Dakota. Chief Spotted Tail was instrumental in keeping alcohol away from the tribe, having knowledge of the
devastating effects that the use of alcohol would have on his tribe. Spotted Tail was of the belief that education
would be an important step needed to take so that his people would be able to go forward in the white society.
Chief Spotted Tail traveled to Washington, D.C. and urged the Federal Government to bring teachers to the Rosebud
Reservation. The Federal Government sent the Black Robes (Catholic Church) to the Rosebud Reservation in the late
1800's. This furthered Chief Spotted Tail's vision of education for his people. Chief Spotted Tail is credited with
having the understanding of the white man's ways and urged the Federal Government to take a slower approach in the
transition from a hunting society to a settled society. Chief Spotted Tail died in August of 1881 and is buried
in a cemetery on the north hill of the present day Rosebud Community. Sinte Gleska University was founded on the
Rosebud Reservation in the early 1970's in Rosebud, S.D. by men who shared the vision of the importance of Education
as Chief Spotted Tail.
